Marchwind 64 is an unofficial native recompilation of Super Robot Wars 64. We turned the 1999 N64 game into a program that runs directly on computers, the Steam Deck and Android phones, with full Chinese and English translations, widescreen and optional HD art. No ROM is included: you need your own original Japanese ROM.
0.4.0 is the first public release, and it is a feature preview: everything you need to play from start to finish is there, but it is still rough. Please treat it as a trial, and tell us what you find.
Where things stand
- The translation has not been hand-edited yet. The Chinese and English text is mostly machine-translated, then given one pass to remove the stiffness of a literal translation, with the names of people, units and weapons kept consistent. No one has gone through it line by line yet, so expect awkward tone, odd word choices and mistranslations. The Japanese is the original text.
- Expect plenty of bugs. The original game logic runs as it was, but our new screens, the translated text layout, the HD art and widescreen can all go wrong. If you hit freezes, crashes or wrong pictures, keep a spare save slot.
- Testing on each platform is limited. macOS has had the most testing. The Steam Deck, Windows, Linux and Android have only been tried on a few devices, and Windows and Android are experimental.
Feedback
- Problems with the program: please open an issue on GitHub. Fill in the form. In the game, Options → Report copies your platform info in one click and exports a problem report with your settings and the logs of the last few runs to attach to the issue; screenshots or saves help too.
- Text suggestions: on the site’s Story and Library pages, every line and every name has a button for suggesting a correction. Suggestions we have handled are listed on the Suggestions page, and accepted changes go into the next release.
Download
Download from the Install page, where each file’s SHA-256 checksum is listed at the bottom, or from GitHub. The HD art pack is a separate download, version HD 1.0, for every platform.
Features
- Five platforms: macOS (Apple silicon), Windows, Linux, Steam Deck and Android (arm64, Android 9 or later).
- Three languages: full Chinese and English translations alongside the original Japanese, switchable at any time.
- HD art pack: redrawn portraits, intermission backgrounds, world map, tactical maps, unit poses and battle animations, with the original art a switch away.
- Widescreen: the picture fills the screen, from 4:3 to 16:9.
- Filters and bezels: RetroArch’s CRT and other filters and bezels, or your own filter and bezel folders.
- Saves: several save slots, autosave, and saves shared with ares, Project64, mupen64plus and RetroArch.
- Reading and controls: dialogue backlog, auto-advance, fast-forward and skip, battle animation abort, hold R to jump to the farthest square, and remappable controls; play with a controller, keyboard or touch screen.
- Fixes for the original’s bugs: on by default, each one switchable in Options.
- Library and battle viewer: open them from the title screen or Options. The Library shows every unit and character; the battle viewer lets you pick the attacker, defender, weapon and scene and watch the battle animation.
- Also: cheats (never saved), an update check that asks once at startup and never downloads by itself, and an AI debug interface for developers (MCP, off by default).
Notes
- The macOS app is not notarized by Apple. The first time you open it, allow it under System Settings → Privacy & Security.
- Z+START in battle is the original game’s soft reset: it returns to the title screen and unsaved progress is lost.
- This is an unofficial fan work, not affiliated with Bandai Namco, Banpresto or the owners of the original series.
