Super Robot Wars 64 Guide: Flow Chart, Secrets and Reference
Upgrades and inheritance
SRW64's upgrade cap depends on the unit (6–15 levels): strong units get fewer, weak and mass-production units more. The increase and price of each level are the same for every unit and depend only on which level you're at. Values on this page come from the ROM's upgrade increment table, price table and unit data, recomputed cell by cell against the code; swap carry-over and story-granted levels come from parsing the carry-over table and the scripts.

- Combination attacks, repair devices, Resupply Device and some G Gundam finishers can't be upgraded individually

Upgrade caps of commonly used player units
| Cap | Unit |
|---|---|
| 6 | Gundam Sandrock (the only one in the game) |
| 7 | Nu Gundam, MP Nu Gundam F, Wing Gundam, Wing Zero, Wing Zero Custom, Gundam Deathscythe, Gundam Deathscythe Hell, Deathscythe Hell Custom, Gundam Heavyarms, Gundam Heavyarms Kai, Heavyarms Custom, Shenlong Gundam, Altron Gundam, Altron Custom, Gundam Sandrock Kai, Sandrock Custom, Gundam Epyon, Getter-1, Getter Dragon, Shin Getter-1, Daitarn 3, Godmars |
| 8 | Zambird, Zambull, Zambase, Zambo-Ace, Zambot 3 |
| 9 | Burning Gundam, Shining Gundam, Gundam Maxter, Gundam Rose, Dragon Gundam, Bolt Gundam, ZZ Gundam, Gundam Mk-III, Hyaku-Shiki, FA Hyaku-Shiki Kai, Qubeley Mk-II, Jagd Doga, Tallgeese III, Dancouga, Grendizer, Spazer, Layzner, New Layzner, Sirbine, Billbine, Zwauth, Ashcleef, Razgreez |
| 10 | Combattler V, Eagle Fighter, Big Moth, Land Cougar, Land Liger |
| 11 | Zeta Gundam, Super Gundam, Dijeh SE-R, Methuss Kai, Re-GZ (BWS), MP Nu Gundam I, GP03 Dendrobium, Neue Ziel, Tallgeese, Peacemillion, Great Mazinger, MP Great Mazinger, Shadow Gundam, Noble Gundam, Rising Gundam, Zeron, Virose, Super Earthgain, Sweemurg S, Buldy, Baybull |
| 12 | Mazinger Z (unique in the whole game; the JS version is 13) |
| 13 | Argama, Nahel Argama, Ra Cailum, Albion, Audhumla, La Vie en Rose, Gran-Garan, Goraon, Gundam Mk-II, Mazinger Z (JS), Venus A, Double Spazer, Drill Spazer, Marine Spazer, Giant Robo, Black Wing, Dunbine, Bastole, Greimkaiser, Gaia, Taurus, Norouz, Sigroon |
| 15 | Gundam, Guncannon, Guntank, Jegan, Schuzrum-Dias, Gundam Ez8, G-Defenser, Diana A, Boss Borot, Minerva X, Botune, Doll, Cosmo Crusher, Ginrei Robo, Elbulls, Shuttle |
- Caps aren't necessarily the same within a combination/Transform group: Gundam Mk-II 13 vs Super Gundam 11, the four Dancouga units 10 vs Dancouga 9, the Spazer series 13 vs Grendizer 9, Gaia 13 vs Godmars 7
- Once the Gundam Mk-II is upgraded to level 12 or 13, the Super Gundam's level exceeds its own cap: stats are still calculated at level 13, it just can't be upgraded further
What else the cap determines
- The five stats and every weapon of the unit share the same cap
- When all five stats of each of the five W units are fully upgraded, it automatically becomes its custom version (only the five stats count, not weapons)
- Some weapons unlock extra weapons when fully upgraded; see the “Extra weapons” page
- Sale price of sellable mass-produced units = base price + 20,000 × the fraction of upgrade levels done out of the total upgradable
- Each upgrade level in the save has only 4 bits, so 15 levels is the format's own cap
Upgrade inheritance on unit swaps

| Qubeley Mk-II (black, Ple) | Qubeley Mk-II (red, Ple-Two) | After choosing to stay on Earth at the end of stage 50, a second choice appears if both Ple and Ple-Two are on the team; pick “Make it Ple-Two's red” | The five stats and weapons carry over (the Funnel MAP unlock carries over too); the black one is deleted |
| Super Beast Machine God | Super Beast Machine God | OZ route: end of stage 21; Independence Army and Complete Pacifism routes: start of stage 22 | The same unit upgrades in place, keeping all five stats and weapons; parts equipped on each form go back to storage |
| Gundam Sandrock | Gundam Sandrock Kai | Complete Pacifism route only: end of stage 32, “Return to the Battlefield” (Quatre returns in stage 28 with the Gundam Sandrock at 3 levels) | The five stats plus Vulcan, Homing Missile, Heat Shotel and Shield Flash carry over; Cross Crusher upgrades don't carry over; Beam Machine Gun starts from level 0. For the OZ route and Independence Army route, see “Lost upgrades” |
| Wing Zero, Gundam Sandrock Kai, Gundam Deathscythe Hell, Gundam Heavyarms Kai, Altron Gundam | Their respective Customs | Changes automatically once all five stats are fully upgraded | The five stats stay fully upgraded; weapons carry over per the table below |
- Inheritance happens only if the old unit is still on the team at that moment (regardless of who pilots it); after a swap the old unit is always deleted
- The five stat levels carry over as a block, synced across Transform and combined forms; weapons carry over one by one per the game's mapping table, and weapons with no entry start from level 0; repair devices and combination attacks can't be upgraded anyway and are unaffected
- Upgrade caps are not inherited; the new unit uses its own cap
- The game's swap table also has Gundam Deathscythe → Gundam Deathscythe Hell, Gundam Heavyarms → Gundam Heavyarms Kai and Shenlong Gundam → Altron Gundam, but the story always deletes the old unit along with its pilot first, so these three swaps never actually inherit
The W units switch to their custom versions (Endless Waltz versions)
| Original unit | Custom version | Removed weapons | New weapon |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wing Zero | Wing Zero Custom | None | None (all 5 inherited; Twin Buster Rifle 2 MAP is usable right after the refit) |
| Altron Gundam | Altron Custom | Beam Cannon | None (in the original Dragon Fire does not inherit upgrades; see below) |
| Gundam Deathscythe Hell | Deathscythe Hell Custom | Buster Shield | Twin Beam Scythe becomes the Beam Scissors; upgrades carry over |
| Gundam Sandrock Kai | Sandrock Custom | Homing Missile, Shield Flash, Beam Machine Gun | Cross Crusher (from 0 levels) |
| Gundam Heavyarms Kai | Heavyarms Custom | Army Knife | None (Full Barrage MAP is usable right after the refit; upgrades are inherited) |
- Refit condition: after you confirm an upgrade of the five stats on the upgrade screen, the refit happens at once if all five are at the original cap (7 for all five of these units); weapon levels don't matter, and it happens even without a pilot
- The five stats are still fully upgraded after the change; each weapon keeps its previous level
- The Altron Custom's Dragon Fire didn't carry over upgrades in the original (missing from the table); this port fixes it by default
Why upgrades are really lost
| Unit | Where upgrades are lost | What happens next | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Medea → Audhumla | Start of stage 7 “Blade of Anguish” on Real | — | This pair is not in the game's inheritance table; Super has no Medea |
| Audhumla → Albion | End of stage 11 “From Between Sea and Land” | — | Same as above |
| Gaia → Godmars | End of OZ route stage 29, Independence Army route stage 34 and Complete Pacifism route stage 33 (both branches) | Gaia joins in stage 28 on the OZ route, stage 32 on the Independence Army route, and stage 31 on the Complete Pacifism route | The Gaia is deleted on combining; its upgrade levels aren't copied |
| Gundam Sandrock (Quatre) | OZ route: start of stage 21; Independence Army and Complete Pacifism routes: end of stage 22 | OZ route: returns mid-stage in stage 33 as the Gundam Sandrock Kai (0 levels); Independence Army route: start of stage 36 (3 levels); Complete Pacifism route: returns at the start of stage 28 as the Gundam Sandrock (3 levels), fully carried over at the stage 32 swap | The story deletes the character and the unit together when they leave |
| Gundam Deathscythe (Duo) | Same as above | Gundam Deathscythe Hell: OZ route mid-stage 34 (5 levels); Independence Army route mid-stage 28 (3 levels); Complete Pacifism route (with Treize) mid-stage 34 (3 levels); Complete Pacifism route (going it alone) start of stage 35 (0 levels) | Same as above |
| Wing Gundam (Heero) | Same as above | Wing Zero: OZ route stage 36 mid-stage (0 levels); Independence Army route stage 36 start (3 levels); Complete Pacifism route (with Treize) stage 35 mid-stage (3 levels); Complete Pacifism route (fighting alone) stage 35 start (0 levels) | Same as above. The Gundam Epyon that Heero uses in OZ route stages 31–33 is handed to Zechs with its upgrades, so nothing is lost |
| Gundam Heavyarms (Trowa) | Same as above | Gundam Heavyarms Kai (3 levels): OZ route end of stage 45; Independence Army route start of stage 42 | Same as above |
| Shenlong Gundam (Wufei) | Choosing OZ at the end of stage 20 “Operation Daybreak”; end of stage 22 on the Independence Army and Complete Pacifism routes | Altron Gundam (3 levels): OZ route end of stage 45; Independence Army route end of stage 45 | Same as above |
| Shadow Gundam (Schwarz) | Start of stage 30 on the Independence Army route; start of stage 30 on the OZ route; end of stage 23 on the Complete Pacifism route | OZ route: rejoins mid-stage in stage 38 (0 levels), and leaves again if Ryoma isn't on the map at the start of stage 42 | Same as above, with upgrades reset to zero |
| Ra Cailum (Henken) | Start of stage 52 | On the stay-on-Earth path, Henken gets a new Ra Cailum in stage 51 | Henken leaves along with his ship; the Ra Cailum that Bright switches to is a new unit that inherits from the Nahel Argama |
| Gundam Epyon (Zechs) | OZ route: if you choose the Tallgeese III rebuild at the end of stage 47 “Haman's Shadow” | Tallgeese III starts from 0 levels | The Gundam Epyon is scrapped, and the carry-over table has no entry for this pair; choosing to keep the Gundam Epyon has no effect |

- The gift sets the five stats and all weapons to the same level (up to the unit's cap), overwriting existing levels
- Units that join through deployment also carry the upgrade levels in their deployment record; for the W series see the “Lost upgrades” table
Related optional rules
- Fix “Machine swap: carry over three weapons the table misses” (on by default): adds the Flamethrower and Grenade Launcher for Layzner → New Layzner and the Dragon Fire for Altron Gundam → Custom; it takes effect only at the moment of the swap — turning it off later doesn't undo it, and turning it on doesn't backfill swaps that already happenedNot verified in game
- Difficulty “Upgrade cap” (off by default): every unit can be upgraded to 15 on the upgrade screen, with cells beyond the original cap shown as ● (upgraded) / ☆ (not upgraded); Custom refits, extra weapon unlocks, sale prices, story-gifted levels and swap inheritance still use the original cap; levels already raised are kept if you turn it off, but can't be raised further
- Difficulty “Departure refund” (off by default): when the story removes a unit from the team (leaving, the old unit deleted after a swap, the Godmars combination), the upgrade funds spent on it are refunded at current prices, with a notice at the top of the screen and in the dialogue log; selling and battlefield exits are not refunded; levels inherited by a new unit and story-gifted levels are not refunded, but levels a unit brings when it joins are
- For how parts are handled in unit swaps, see the “Parts” page
